For tourists and expats alike, finding English-language medical care can be one of the biggest challenges of coming to Tokyo. Although Japan enjoys a high-quality standard of medical care, the language barrier can greatly reduce options for non- or limited-Japanese speakers and become an additional source of anxiety during a medical crisis. Keep reading as we guide you through all the necessary steps for seeking medical care in Japan and provide a comprehensive list of English-speaking doctors and hospitals in Tokyo.

Below is an updated list of English-speaking hospitals and clinics in Tokyo. As most medical emergencies happen suddenly, we recommend that you bookmark this page so that you will be able to find it quickly when needed.
Important: We advise you to call the institution in advance to confirm whether or not appointments are necessary. It may help you to register with a doctor you feel comfortable with in your neighborhood, especially when you have small children with you.

In Case of Illness or Injury
In the event that you or someone else falls ill or becomes injured, the Tokyo EMS Guide can help you assess your medical situation and evaluate whether or not the symptoms are severe enough to warrant calling an ambulance.
If you judge that an ambulance isn’t necessary but still need to go to the hospital, it’s important to know that not all hospitals in Tokyo can receive patients around the clock. Even hospitals with 24-hour emergency rooms (accident & emergency department) may not have the necessary specialist on hand to see to your specific medical emergency. That’s why it’s important to call ahead and confirm before heading into the emergency room.
Himawari Medical Information Service in Tokyo
The Himawari Medical Information Service can help you find English-speaking hospitals, pharmacies, and birthing centers that are open near your location in Tokyo. Use their website to search and filter by area of Tokyo, nearest train station, and/or specific medical concern. You can also refine your search for medical institutions offering foreign language support in English or any of 15 other languages.
If you prefer to speak with someone over the phone, the Tokyo Metropolitan Health and Medical Information Center provides telephone information about medical institutions with staff who can speak foreign languages, including English, Chinese, Korean, Thai, and Spanish. The hotline is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at TEL: 03-5285-8181.
Emergency translation services are also provided at TEL: 03-5285-8185, weekdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends and holidays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Other General Healthcare Consultants in Japan
The AMDA International Medical Information Center is a useful resource for those living in Japan, offering medical information in English, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Spanish, and Filipino. Other Common Medical Information for Tokyo Expats
For Tokyo expats needing care for other non-emergency medical concerns, you can typically visit a medical institution or clinic during regular hospital hours — no appointment needed — although some specialized medical centers may require an appointment and/or a referral letter from your general physician. Call ahead or check the hospital’s website for more information.
You will need to bring your National Health Insurance (kokumin kenko-hoken) card or Employee Health Insurance (shakai kenko-hoken) card. Private coverage, such as medical insurance from overseas, is not accepted at almost all hospitals and clinics so be sure to inquire by phone before visiting.
