Fireworks (Hanabi) Festival in Tokyo 2025

Poste date: Monday, June 16, 2025

Every year, Japan hosts many beautiful firework events that light up the summer night sky. But why are there so many fireworks festivals in Japan? These events originally began as a way to honor and appease the spirits of ancestors during the “Obon” period—a traditional annual Buddhist event held in summer to commemorate those who have passed away.

Over time, fireworks became a form of community celebration and summer entertainment, and today, they remain a beloved tradition across Japan.

Japan is known for having some of the most stunning fireworks displays in the world. Fireworks have even been featured during past Olympic Games held in Japan. These events are extremely popular among both Japanese and international residents of Tokyo, and they continue to grow as one of Japan’s major summer tourist attractions. In recent years, it’s become common to see foreign visitors wearing yukata (a casual summer kimono), joining Japanese locals in enjoying these spectacular events.

Below are the major fireworks festivals scheduled in the Tokyo area for 2025.

Please note: In case of bad weather, fireworks may be cancelled or rescheduled to the following day or a later date. Event details are subject to change without notice.

Tokyo Racecourse Fireworks 2025 (July 2)

The “Tokyo Racecourse Fireworks 2025 – Fireworks x J-POP BEST” will light up the night sky with 14,000 fireworks on Wednesday, July 2 in Fuchu, Tokyo.

Known as Tokyo’s earliest summer fireworks, this one-night-only event has become a favorite since 2022. Each year features a music theme synchronized with fireworks, with past editions celebrating The Rolling Stones, YUMING, and City Pop.

This year’s theme celebrates “100 Years of Showa” with iconic J-POP hits—beloved songs from the Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa eras. Expect powerful fireworks set to nostalgic melodies, launched from as close as 100 meters away for an unforgettable experience.
