Food Bank Azabu will also participate in the Expo and will hold a seminar titled “The Japanese Spirit of Mottainai” on Saturday, November 9 at 11:00, in collaboration with related charity organizations.

In this seminar, we will explore the meaning and usage of the traditional Japanese term “mottainai,” discuss the recycling practices from the Edo period  that emphasized resourcefulness, and explain the difference between best-before and expiration dates — all in English. Attendance is free, so we warmly invite anyone interested in Japanese culture or the spirit of “mottainai” to join us!

Food Donation

At the Food Bank Azabu booth, we are also accepting food donations. If you have food items at home that you cannot consume, please consider bringing them. They will be helpful in supporting those in need.

  • Seminar Video: Food Waste in Japan and Date Labeling Differences

We have published the video of the lecture on food waste in Japan and the differences in date labeling (in English) held at EXPAT EXPO TOKYO 2024. In 2022, Japan generated an estimated 4.72 million metric tons of food waste. This is a significant amount. In this video, we’ll explore the major sources of food waste in Japan and the actions being taken to reduce it. We’ll also explain the differences between "Use By" and "Best Before" dates, and discuss whether it’s safe to eat expired food.
  • We have launched CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Initiatives

Plaza Homes Ltd. and All Japan Relocation Inc. have launched a food bank project (Food Bank Azabu) as part of our CSR projects. A food collection center for the needy, will be set up on the first floor of our company (1-9-12 Azabudai, Minato-ku, Tokyo) to accept surplus food from neighborhood residents and the foreign community. We deliver the food to support groups for the needy and refugee assistance organizations.

  • Poverty Situation in Japan: Reality and Challenges

Despite Japan being perceived as a prosperous country from abroad, the poverty situation in Japan is severe, with many people facing poverty. The reality becomes evident when considering the relative poverty rate and the number of individuals receiving social welfare benefits. Notably, poverty has intensified in various households, including elderly households, households with individuals who are ill or disabled, and single-parent households with children. The impact of poverty is also reflected in the inadequate access to meals, as evident by the limited number of breakfasts and lunches for children. This article summarizes the current reality of Japan's poverty situation and highlights the challenges it presents.
