We Delivered Onigiri to People in Need

Food Bank Azabu, as part of its ongoing efforts, typically distributes non-perishable food donations to those in need. However, until now, we had not been preparing and delivering cooked meals. Many people in need do not have access to a home or cooking equipment, which makes it impossible for them to prepare rice or noodles.

On March 29th (Saturday), in collaboration with the staff of the general incorporated association Nanairo, an organization that supports the self-reliance of those facing financial hardship, and employees of Plaza Homes, we made and distributed 250 onigiri (rice balls) to people in need.

We used rice donated by the general public, cooking it in a large rice cooker to make various types of onigiri. The distribution took place in front of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. Since other organizations were also distributing food, many people in need gathered from all over the city to seek assistance.

Despite the rain, we set up under the elevated section in front of the government building, and as we began distributing, a large crowd lined up to receive onigiri. The freshly made onigiri with various flavors brought joy to many people.

Due to the ongoing rise in living costs, the number of people in the line has been rapidly increasing recently. In addition to food, seasonal clothing and daily necessities were also greatly appreciated by those who received them. To make better use of the food donations, we plan to continue the onigiri distribution as a regular volunteer activity moving forward.

Nanairo, the general incorporated association, holds food distribution and self-reliance support (assisting with applications for public assistance, housing referrals, and job support) every Saturday from 14:00 at the Shinjuku Metropolitan Government Building. Food Bank Azabu supports this initiative by providing food donations.
