Where to buy sweet Valentine’s chocolate in Tokyo

Post: Friday February 10, 2017

Valentine’s Day (February 14th) is celebrated in Japan every year not just by couples, but between friends and families.

The custom of giving chocolate as a gift from the female to their favorite male has started around the 1950s in Japan. There is one thing about Valentine’s Day in Japan that is probably uncommon in other countries. Surprisingly in Japan, it is the women who gives presents to men.

There are also many people who give chocolate to their colleagues and bosses and not just the opposite gender. This is considered as the "obligatory chocolate (Giri-choko)" and it has a meaning of maintaining a good relationship with people who take care of you.

Japan also celebrates "White Day" on March 14th one month after Valentine’s Day which is a chance for men to give back to women with nice gifts.

Happya Valentines Day

The special section of chocolate are arranged in department stores and retail stores from the end of January every year. During this time, many luxury chocolate brands are sold in unique packaging and it is also recommended for enjoying by yourself.

In Department Stores (like Mitsukoshi, Isetan, Marui, etc.) Valentine’s Day sweets are displayed nicely in glass showcases by many popular stores during this time. It is enjoyable to stop by a department store if you have time, just to observe the cute and creative sweets made especially for Valentine’s Day. If you are unsure about where to check out for Valentine’s chocolate, we recommend you to go to the department stores for a wide selection.
