Damages on condominium apartments caused by Great East Japan Earthquake

On September 21st, The Condominium Management Companies Association announced the status of damages caused by Great East Japan Earthquake on the condominium apartments in northern and central Honshu areas.  Out of 46,365 buildings (2,327,400 units in total) investigated, no property was “destroyed”, which damage is so significant that the building had to be re-build.  Only 0.1% of buildings had medium level damages that required major reinforcements or renovations.  The 2.5% of buildings had minor level damages including tiles falling off and cracks.  According to the data sorted the level of damages by age of the property, there was no apparent differences in damage level between before or after the New Anti-seismic Design Standard put in effect as of 1981.  It reassured that the structures of condominium apartments are generally durable and has high tolerance against earthquakes.
